Friends of Woodlands and Waters offers a forest ecology walk led by Neil Pederson, at the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge. The cusp of autumn is perfect for outdoor walking. Cooler weather, fewer mosquitoes! Neil is a researcher associated with Harvard Forest, with interests in old growth forests, dendrochronology, and disturbance ecology. The complex land use history of the Assabet River NWR lends itself well to a discussion of disturbance ecology. Neil will guide us as we read the landscape, understanding how tree and shrub species distributions reveal the history of a forest, and how this is impacted by the moisture regime, and effects of climate change and invasive species. This is a free event.
