Elizabeth Perry will lead a Fern Identification Program at the Assabet River NWR, where participants will learn the characteristics of over 10 different types of ferns. This program will be similar to the educational and enjoyable Fern Identification Program she led in June at the Oxbow NWR, with some different ecosystems and a slightly different list of fern species to be observed.
Ferns are a distinctive part of our natural environment, but it can be a challenge to identify individual species. In this introduction to fern identification, we’ll discuss what characteristics to look for to help identify ferns, without technical jargon. We’ll then go for a walk and put our new knowledge into practice. Expect to see about 10 of our most common fern species. This walk is geared towards adults; curious adolescents also welcome.
Elizabeth Perry is a geologist, and a formerly frustrated fern identifier. She is a member of the Pioneer Valley Fern Society of western Massachusetts.
